Remember the oap that caught a squirrel in a humane strap and then dropped the whole thing into the water butt because he had no idea what to do with it? The RSPCA prosecuted him for cruelty and he was fined shedloads. You have to take them to the vet to be put down. I presume as a rat is a squirrel without the furry tail, it'd be the same.
