Harleyman
So why weren't Churchill and the other who gave the orders dragged before the international courts? Your knowledge of history is at about the same level as my knowledge of nuclear physics. And, by the way there was no such things as International Courts in the days that these events took place ________________________________________________________________________ Alumni, Cuckoo Park Institute for the mentally deranged and criminally insane

It set a kind of precedent, but a deeply flawed one in that, if you on the winning side, you are far less likely to end up in an international criminal court than if you are a loser. flamingjimmy
So why weren't Churchill and the other who gave the orders dragged before the international courts? Because they were the victors. edit: dammit, I hate when I get ninja'd by a more informative post.

Kaimani
osama bin laden. i'd say, outside of the religious figures( all grossly overrated) he's probably The Most overrated person in history. the reason are varied( on both sides of the fight) but he deserves about as much notoriety as, maybe, megrahi or attah or some such. Yes true to an extent but there had never been a war in history on the scale of destruction, ferocity and wanton genocide than that of WW2. The actions of the Nazi leaders in purposely ordering the deaths of literally millions of civilians had no precedent in warfare prior to WW2. Therefore the Nazi leaders fell into a special category in the eyes of the Allied leaders and were charged as murderers and criminals and rightly so. ______________________________________________________________________ Alumni, Cuckoo Park Institute for the mentally deranged and criminally insane
Annoni_mouse
I'll chuck Rommel and Patton into the mix. Both gained reputations far in excess of their actual talents post war. Montgomery too might make the list except for the hatchet job that most revsionist historians (and not to mention Hollywood) have done on him in recent years. RootsBooster
Saint Patrick? Americans especially (in my experience) celebrate him furiously, on the one day of the year they try desperately to link themselves to Irish roots of any kind. Most don't even realise he WASN'T Irish! (P.S. I have nothing against the Irish or St.Paddy, just pointing out he is overrated)
shaft1
Lady/Princess/Tart Diana... couldn't stand how she manipulated the whole country to go against the royals. Not that i'm a fan of any of them. and how no one mentions that she couldn't keep her legs closed. David Beckham... for getting 1 out of 200 free kicks on target and taking all the pludits whereas the rest of his teammates don't get a mention. not historic but wish he was. Christopher columbus... he didn't discover america. It was Giovanni Caboto (known in English as John Cabot). Stephen Hawking... not historical but nevertheless overrated. Just because of physical disability people seem to think he's a genius for coming up with some of the things he does. In fact there are many more intelligent and insightful scientists who don't get any recongnistion.
