Libya. Do the people need us?

Recommended Posts

If you're going to try to enforce a 'no fly' zone, then first you must destroy all the Air Defence systems in Libya. Those operated by Gadhafi AND those operated by the rebels.

You will kill a lot of people on both sides. Neither side is likely to thank you for killing its people. If Obama (who's also talking about 'no fly' zones) and Cameron are trying to make sure that whoever wins will dislike and distrust both the US and the UK, that may well be the way to do it.

No US intervention in this one I sincerely hope. Let the Libyans sort it out themselves and in that way the US wont be the whipping boy if things go wrong and Libya ends up a ruined economic basket case.

The US only imports around 20 percent of middle east oil anyway and Obama is best served taking care of the hardship being experienced by Americans who are seeing gas prices going out of sight and the resulting prospect of food and consumer product prices rising in tandem.

There are around 700 million gallons of oil reserves currently available in the US. I hope he does what Clinton did during a similar rise in prices and release some of it for public use.

We should set up a no fly zone for the pro democracy rebels. Military force against civilians is a humanitarian disaster waiting to happen. Are we all about profit now? How comfortable will we feel watching a genocidal mad man blow people to pieces who only want to be free?

I've never seen the point of aiding an unknown bunch to overthrow a government. The rebels are not united and will probably start their own power struggle. It happened in Yugoslavia in WW2 when the resistance groups turned to fighting amongst themselves rather than the Germans.

You don't make any friends by backing the wrong side, and I'm not convinced that Gaddaffi won't still be there come Christmas.

How are you going to do that? Do those rebels not have Air Defence systems? (The TV news film shows a number of rebels with ZSU23-4's and ZSU 23-2's.)

Do you really think the rebels can tell the difference between one of Gadhafi's aircraft and one of ours? - If it's flying near you and it might be a threat, knock it down.

If you want to set up a 'no-fly' zone you must first destroy the Air Defence systems. And the Libyans are fairly well equipped.

Jeremy Bowen said that 'some of the rebels are quite well-equipped, they've got tanks.'

What else have they got their hands on?

We should let them wipe each other out. Then take the oil for free.

Didn't the American fleet go on "manoeuvres" in the gulf recently?

The aircraft which fly off carriers are just as vulnerable to Air Defence systems as those which fly from airfields.

I'll say it again: If you are going to enforce a no-fly zone, you must first destroy the Air Defence systems. Those held and operated by both sides.
