Mecky
It's not a foregone conclusion. If a government were determined enough, they could cut it down to pre 1997 levels. That would mean increasing the level of staff and spending. UKBA cannot cope at current staffing and funding levels. As it is 25% of staff face the axe and spending is to be reduced by even more than that level.
mj.scuba
That is the cause of the problem. Labour paid people more money to not work, and punished the ones who did. Migrants travelled from all over the world to do the work the brits would refuse to do In the year 2009/10, benefit payments exceeded income tax receipts by about £24billion. Yes, £24 billion! Source: Daily Telegraph Labour did not dare challange the situation, because whilst ever people were being paid not to work, that was more votes for them. Instead, bring in millions of migrant workers, who, in time, will probably also vote Labour. A win win strategy for Labour, it's the country that pays the price. If migrants are coming to Britain to do the jobs that the Brits refuse to do where is your sense of personal responsibility?
Michael_W
Generations of working people have been taxed to create the 'Welfare State' so it can be dished out to all and sundry who come here, and I don't blame those who have come here, but the self serving 'hypocritical socialists', that were 'New Labour' ! I actually applaud the immigrants who have come to Britain and done the various warehouse/factory/menial jobs that Britains like Lad On Dole think they are above doing. When in actual fact, they're not, and these are the people who should be forced to work in such areas, or they don't get any money at all. Some people need to realise what kind of position they're in, I would work a minimum wage job, doing the same thing all day every day if I had to, certainly wouldn't like to find myself in a position where I am relying on others to provide for myself and my family. UKBA don't make policy, they only enforce it, the human interface at the border.

Amongst those who paid into the system were people who came from Carribean and Asian countries who after WW2 worked as lowly paid employees in transport jobs, the NHS and cotton mills too. I also think you missed out in your criticism the fact that business, both large and small have benefitted greatly from having people who come from the world over to do low paid jobs, often without trade union representation. Hadron
It is obvious to most people that immigration control is a joke. My personal view is to keep and train the people already here to a level where they can return home with good jobs and experience to pass on to their fellow countrymen when they all return home in 3-5 years and make the commonwealth grow to include our new ambassadors. Places like Libya, Pakistan and Somalia would then become safe nations.

My bold - exactly right, do you think those hard working people of Afro Carribean or Asian origin that came here years ago want to see their money being wasted on the feckless anymore or less than anybody else? Business would have benefitted whoever they got to do the jobs they needed doing, it wouldn't have put them at a disadvantage if British people did them.
