Huscarl
These stills, of the Parkway/Catcliffe area, are from Michael Wood's unreleased BBC tv 1979-81 eight episode series "In Search of the Dark Ages", in this case documenting an ancient battle (Brunanburh, 937ad) which supposedly occurred in this region. But does this area, I think it's the north side of the A630, still exist as in the images, or has it now been built upon by the local housing estate, or airport? http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i170/ironside_photos/00-09-54.jpg http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i170/ironside_photos/00-06-34.jpg http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i170/ironside_photos/00-08-14.jpg http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i170/ironside_photos/00-08-58.jpg http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i170/ironside_photos/00-09-06.jpg http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i170/ironside_photos/00-09-10.jpg http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i170/ironside_photos/00-09-15.jpg

Huscarl
Xenia and Guzzi, yes, this episode was the one about Athelstan (and the battle of Brunanburh, 937)- in the series other characters studied were, not in this order, Erik Bloodaxe, Offa, Boudica, Arthur, Ethelred, William I and Alfred the Great. I think the spot/s that these shots were taken is now the 'new' housing estate on the hill top.

Huscarl
I remember this and the graphic description of Eric's death. Apparently he was spread eagled I think you might be thinking of the death of Ragnar Lothbrok? He was captured by the Northumbrians and staked into a pitful of adder snakes? His dying curses rang true- his sons, led by Ivar 'the Boneless' led a colossal viking invasion fleet years later, in 865, called the "Great Army"
