carosio
Something like a Vauxhall Astra 1.7 Diesel should be fine I've had one of these since I bought it in 2002, best thing is there's no fancy electronics to go wrong, however the J reg Fiesta 1.1 that I had (until it was stolen) almost matched it for economy. Rupert_Baehr
'City diesel' is supposed to produce lower levels of pollutants and - AFAIK - you can still fill up for under a grand.
Dave_H
Rover 420 or 45. Not too fashionable, so cheap to buy. Cheap to run and around 50mpg. I've had 3 and none cost more than £850.
