Probably by accident, along the lines of "if we smash some critter over the head to kill it, the bit where its brains have leaked all over the hide is much more useful fabric than the rest." I imagine that was discovered not long after it was realised that bashing critters over the head killed them a lot more quickly than repeatedly bashing them on the backside.
