Is the term 'jobsworth' now redundant?

Indeed - so is it fair to apply such a perjorative term to someone who is just sticking to the rules because they know their job might be on the line if they don't.

 

No, not fair at all. It'd be interesting to see how their critics would behave in the same position.

 

That said, there are some people who seem to relish the opportunity to be petty and who use the rulebook as a stick to beat people with. Thankfully, they are in a very small minority.

Here's another case reported today in the Telegraph. 7.5 hours of public workers time wasted on a 'restorative justice conference' after schoolboys call female police officer "PC Nipples" [:hihi:]
