The USA that we suck up to was once our biggest enemy and had a direct hand in cutting us down to size because we were a competitor to their shipping trade. The amity between Britain and America goes back a little further than that, but in essence you're entirely correct. At least up until 1890 the two were constantly at loggerheads. I dont see Britain as having gone down the drain in anyway and in fact it's a damn sight better than when I lived there in many ways. Did you see the program on TV the other day with Andrew Marr, showing satellite images from above of how Britain's industrial landscape has changed? Very depressing. The US and Britain because of a common language and heritage maintained close and friendly ties after tjhe war of 1812.
