Tradescanthia
I would NEVER take a timing belt beyond 50,000 miles, despite what the book says. Same with oil changes, always change more often than the book says.

medusa
Please don't name the garage involved, as this would result in the thread being removed. The implications of potential wrongdoing are fine when there's nothing to identify the garage involved, but when there's an identification we'd have to remove it. Alcoblog
Was the car making any strange noise from the engine? The part he alledgedly changed is only accessed by taking the timing belt housing off. A very unusual practice on a car with that mileage and FSH. Did he state he changed the cambelt too? To be honest Rampent, the only strange noise coming from the car was by the 'Fleet foxes' on the CD! I remedied this by supplying (and fitting!) 'The Suburbs' by Arcade fire. To be serious ... no, the cambelt wasn't changed, it's got another 40,000 miles left yet. Something called the jockey wheel was changed (not got the paperwork ... GF has) Think this is some kind of tensioner to the timing belt.

The whole timing kit (belt, tensioners, idlers) is coming up at under £50 on google ...

This is now sounding all so very dodgy indeed. For them not to change the timing belt at the same time is quite shocking IMO. Has the housing cover any tell tale signs of being touched at all? Grease etc? Thumb prints? Even signs of being wiped?
