Growing cross-party concern about the reduction in immigration.

As usual Mecky you know best. Go down to Number 10 and put em straight.

I don't have to, governments are elected to make decisions for us ... unless you're unelected and just seized power like this government did.

The government was elected. It has more than half the MPs voting for it, which is the entire definition of "elected government."

Let's face it, Mecky is right on that point, it wasn't elected. When Labour got in with a minority in 74 it did the honourable thing and held another general election as soon as possible, e.g. 8 months later. Cameron and Clegg were so desperate for power they'd do anything to stay in power and that's what binds this coalition together for now.

aren't governments elected to reflect our decisions and views not make them for us?

Yes and no. There is a difference between elected representatives e.g. MP's and government and elected to represent e.g. a union rep who is a spokesperson. Once an MP and a government is in they use their own judgement based on their own knowledge and expertise. In many ways that's right as left to the great British public we'd have mass deportations, suspected paedophiles hanging from trees, the return of hanging generally, the banning of homosexuality in some areas and probable withdrawal from the EU. All of which are insane which is why MP's/HMG doesn't necessarily reflect public opinion.

i hear what you're saying. the 'elected representative' must, to an extend, use their own judgment and expertise to come to decisions, for the reasons you rightly mentioned. and this works, mostly, between election. where 'our views' being conveyed and represented comes in is we just vote them out next time if they didn't do what we think is right and what we 'agreed' with them when we voted them in.

problem is with their lying and politricking, which is why the governments , mostly, don't reflect the views of the masses, no matter how unpalatable they might be.

The Home Office said it wants to make the education system less open to abuse. They seem to think that reducing the intake of students will reduce the problem of abuse. How mental is that?

plain stupid. the problem is not the colleges or universities, its at the boarder and the agencies that are supposed to police immigration.
