House Alarm Help

Recommended Posts

Our front door magnetic strip has stopped working. We have a C&K Securiteck Alarm, it was working fine it just stopped one day. We can't get it to chime either. The alarm works fine other than that. Any help would be appreciated!

Check the wiring between the alarm panal and the magnetic switch for continuity, if it is OK then check then consider replacing the magnetic switch as it is almost certainly faulty. - you can place a magnet near it to check if the reed switch is still working, you should hear a faint click but a multimeter will tell you if the switch is closing for certain.

If you do all that and it still doesn't work then you may have a problem with the "loop" circuit on your panal - but from what you've said the mag switch is the most likely component that has failed.

Hello, thanks for your reply. Not too sure what you mean, I have a new magnetic switch but can't get it to work. If I touch the blue and red wires together it chimes. I have copied the wiring on the back door which works fine, but the front door is the one we are having problems with. Hope you can help.

Thanks

Ok, in that case the red and blue wires denote a NORMALLY OPEN (NO) circuit, your mag switch may have three (or more) terminals on it, one of the terminals is a common, fix, say, the red wire to it, then try the blue wire on one of the other terminals, one of them will be a NO circuit (Ie: The switch is normally open when the magnet is next to the switch)

The other terminal is a NORMALLY CLOSED (NC) circuit, ie : the switch is normally closed when the magnet is next to the switch, when the door opens and the switch "opens" your panel detect this and triggers the chime / alarm when set.

Just try a bit of trial & error, make a note which terminals do what & you'll soon crack it.

There is a possibility they're wired differently, back door could be a NC circuit & front door a NO circuit (or vice versa) - this is sometimes due to the delay function on your main door which gives you 45 secs to get in & turn off the alarm, the other door may be wired to Instant Alarm on the other type of circuit.

The NC circuits are more secure because if a thief cuts a wire the circuit is broken and the alarm sounds, so they are more "tamper proof".
