They have been around for several years. Using a similar principle as VPS/Startext, a signal is sent from the broadcaster to tell the recorder to enter pause at the start of the ads and a second signal to return to recording mode.

 

Works just fine. The problem is that broadcasters who show commercials operate with the money they get from ad agencies, so they won't transmit the signal.

Yes that's true a small flashing box would appear in the top corner of the screen at one time before the adverts came on.

They're called cue dots, and are still used for their main purpose - allowing programmes to remotely trigger adverts. Nowadays you'll only see them on live programmes, appearing shortly before a break and then disappearing five seconds before the adverts play. I'm a celebrity get me out of here even goes to the extravagance of having two cue-dots, one to play the sponsorship bumber and another to play the adverts.
