Do you dislike people based on their posts?

Recommended Posts

So, if you overheard someone saying 'prostitutes deserve to get raped' are you saying it woudn't produce a negative emotional response in you?

Yes of course it would, I wouldn't necessarily dislike 'them' as a result though. That would make me as narrow minded as they are for holding such an opinion. And let's not forget, opinions change.

I don't understand how someone can dislike someone based on one opinion they hold, surely you dislike, their opinion on that subject, rather than dislike them as a person?!

Mostly you are right. I understand everyone has their opinions on things and they are very much entitled to them. Some people whose opinions I really really disagree with, I actually am very fond of as people.

However when someone says something about a subject close to my heart thats quite extreme - like someone deserves to be raped - then yes I do feel a dislike towards them as a person.

If you passed someone in the street who said (extreme example) "I think child pornography is great, and people ought to lighten up about it, really the children enjoy it", would you think, I dislike that persons view but I don't know them well enough to dislike them personally? If so maybe you are a better person than me!

I don't keep track of who says what - not because I'm so fair-minded and unbiased to actually follow the "attack the post not the poster" theory perfectly; I'm just hopeless at remembering names, so I couldn't keep track if I tried.

I have, in fact, found myself in friendly agreement with somebody on one thread and bitter argument on the thread immediately below it - more than once.
