Fuel duty cut??

Recommended Posts

Its better than no change, or - I'll put this bit in bold - Labour's fuel duty escalator which would have raised costs next week.

• Osborne rejects Labour's proposal for VAT on petrol to be cut. It would take six years to achieve, he says.

• A fair fuel stabiliser to be introduced. Taxes on oil and gas production will rise, funding cuts in fuel duty.

• Labour's proposed fuel duty increases to be abolished.

• Fuel duty to be cut by 1p a litre from tonight.

But no doubt the Tory haters on here still won't be happy.

And it will now be subsidised by all

The new Fair Fuel Stabiliser will be funded by increasing the supplementary charge on North Sea oil and gas production from 20% to 32% from Thursday, he says, and fuel duty will be cut by 1p a litre from 6pm, he says. Big cheers from the government benches.

So in effect anyone who doesn't drive, will now be subsidising our fuel.

As opposed to a 5p/litre rise? So you're 6p/litre better off than you would have been?
You're 1p/litre better off, period. Anything more is political hyperbole/testiculations.

Surely you don't fall for the hype, truman

Meanwhile, as of 23 March 2011, regular diesel in Luxemburg (which has positively no oil or gas resources, and is at least 200 miles from the nearest port/coastline to receive them) is 1.148 Euro (that's £0.998 ) per litre. That's inclusive of the "austerity measures" uplift.

There is still a huge amount of tax being taken by the government on fuel though, if they could see their way to knock that percentage down then it would help on all fronts.

Dropping it by a penny will help a little, but how long will this be for, before the next rise comes in to effect. I suppose that depends on how long this parliament lasts for.

Then no doubt, labour will be voted back in and the motorist will once again become a target.

It wouldn't help on the keeping-earth-in-a-habitable-state front. Burning petrol incurs hideous environmental costs.
