Legitimacy of ADHD as a medical condition

Recommended Posts

ADHD my bum - it should be called ultra naughty chav syndrome, i bet 90% the kids who are supposed to have it come from scroaty chavvy backgrounds and/or have either been spoilt to death or dragged up or a combination of both aswell as being never taught right from wrong.

Well, I worked directly with a centre for ADHD kids and you'd be almost 100% correct here. Sadly. There are genuine cases, but the majority are exactly as you describe. Even the doctors prescribe Ritalin to the super naughty kids, who simply, in many many cases, require a good dose of nothing but parenting.

I too work with 16 - 19 year olds and some of these rekon to have ADHD unfirtunatly I believe that perhaps 10% are genuine whilst the other 90% is down to bad parenting, i.e parents unable to teach their kids right from wrong!! and the fact they can get money from the government if their kids are diagnosed with ADHD!!

My question would be are there any adults with ADHD ?? I dont think ive ever come across a 25 + person with ADHD !!

So do the symptoms vanish once the kids are too old to claim benefits ??

I think undoubtedly it exists. Sadly like many illnesses I think it may well now be being over-diagnosed and used by some parents as an excuse for their badly behaved children.

I agree with you.

I'd compare it with depression or bad back, other problems that are in my opinion over diagnosed for one reason or another. However, it'd be ludicrous to suggest that because of this over diagnosis some people don't actually suffer from debilitating depression of back pain.

Yep here I am and in my forties. symptoms are restlessness - I can't read books, watch films, go to theatre and need to be on the go constantly till I go to bed. As a kid, I wasnt diagnosed cos there was no diagnosis and was thought of as being a bit difficult cos I hated sitting in the classroom. Outside though, I was ok and fitted in well. Even now on work training courses I hardly listen and scribble pages of doodles, but as Ive grown up Ive learnt right from wrong and how to empathise with people and have a successful life. I even manage an office job! I do a number of highly intense sports to fulfill my needs and have twice the energy of my kids and friends half my age.

The problem with adhd kids these days is that they have no physical outlet for their pent-up energy - they all sit in front of computers where mummy can keep an eye on them away from the pedos that exist on every street corner.

Q - why didn't i ever see (cough) adhd when i was growing up 30 years ago ?

A - because kids back then were brought up better than today and made do with what they had and no-one complained !

not trolling just cannot understand why people fall for it :loopy:

Somewhat crudely put but you're more or less right

ADHD certainly does exist.

I had ADHD when it was virtually unknown.

A one year old child cannot CHOOSE not to sleep. My parents had to get knock-out drops for me as a tot, as I could not sleep. How my parents didn't have nervous breakdowns due to their lack of sleep goodness only knows.

I do agree that some kids are simply naughty, and could possibly do with a slapped backside, but in genuine ADD/ ADHD cases, that's no use at all.

We had a boy like you in our class, I'm going back more than 50 years. He's also done well for himself as an adult, but he had a difficult time at school. He was always being punished for not sitting still and paying attention - and it was the belt in Scottish schools in those days. :o But like you, outside the need to sit still and look interested he was ok.

I think there are children with huge amounts of natural energy, and sports and activities will help. Not sure about having a diagnosis at an early age - what help does a child with ADHD get that a restless, inattentive child doesn't get?

Even if mummy and daddy don't want their young kids going out on their own nowadays, whats stopping them from taking them to the park, or swimming, skating, or enrolling them in a football club, or a dance class? As they get older there are sports clubs and after school activities if the problem is just excess energy. Unfortunately, some children aren't socialised from an early age. There appears to be a confusion between the ones who don't know how to behave and those with genuine difficulties. This in turn undermines any genuine diagnosis.
