Whippoorwill
The WIYOS + Tom Attah Sunday April 10th 8pm The Greystones pub, Greystones Rd, Sheffield Advance Tickets £8 from the Greystones or wegottickets.com £10 on the door Info at http://www.whippoorwill.co.uk THE WIYOS American roots music sensations, The Wiyos made a huge impact following their BBC TV debut with Seasick Steve, filmed at The Barbican’s big Folk America extravaganza. In 2009, they went out (by personal invitation) on a 27-date run of US baseball stadiums with Bob Dylan, and last year they wowed a capacity crowd at Celtic Connections Festival in Glasgow and were then invited back over the Atlantic “as the icing on the cake” for Shetland Folk Festival. Reviewers on both sides of the Atlantic have written great things about the ‘live’ performances and the latest ‘Broken Land Bell’ CD. After playing tracks several times on his BBC Radio 2 programme, Bob Harris told listeners“this is great music”. The Los Angeles Times said they were: “A pure joy,” while Americana UK said: “Like Dylan, they display a knack for hammering archaic musical traditions into new directions. The result sounds like a synthesis with a genuine future, something of a rare accomplishment.” Hard-to-please New Yorker told its readers: “This group brings exuberance and intensity to these vintage styles, and its performances are layered with vaudevillian stage antics”. Seasick Steve’s a fan and warns everyone who has not seen the band perform ‘live’: “You’re in for a surprise!” http://thewiyos.com/ TOM ATTAH Tom Attah is a strong and soulful performer of new and original acoustic blues material, based in the UK. Combining the raw power of Son House with the dense hypnotic rhythms of Howlin’ Wolf and the barrel-chested roar of the old blues shouters, Tom’s live shows take audiences on a journey from the Delta to the Download with 21st century intensity. A rich, soulful voice with songs full of personality. The British Blues Man for the 21st Century." Waxdolly Independent Radio "Great sound - and a real "fresh" take on it too whilst still kinda true to the old ways. Impressive."
