Ms Macbeth
Oh dear, he really comes across as a bit of a plonker on this one. Challenged on a radio Sheffield phone in about coalition plans to cut Winter fuel payments he dismissed the callers' concerns, claimed it was a wild Labour allegation and maintained his Government was increasing payments. He has now said he will write to the radio Sheffield and to a caller to "clarify" his remarks. Bad inter-party communication by the sounds of it, but he should have made it his business to know. I don't think many over 60s are aware of the cut, it wasn't very well publicised within the budget spiel.
Gormenghast
What would you prefer from politicians, the ability to constantly spout facts and statistics or the ability to think about the facts and statistics? In fairness to Clegg, he can't possibly know every fact about Government policy. At least he's accepted his error. I agree. The confusion came about because Clegg was talking about Cold Weather Payments, which they have increased, and not the Winter Fuel Allowance. INTERVIEWER
In fairness to Clegg, he can't possibly know every fact about Government policy. Of course not. Clegg is only the Deputy leader of the government, it is ridiculous to imagine that he should be aware of current government policies.
taxman
Of course not. Clegg is only the Deputy leader of the government, it is ridiculous to imagine that he should be aware of current government policies. Or that he'd categorically deny the policy and accuse Labour of making "wild allegations" and "making it up as they go along to frighten people".
