Your son is probably more grown up than his father in a lot of ways so a gentle explanation that people do funny things when they're upset that they regret later might help, plus the repeated reassurance that his dad does love him. One day he'll wake up. I know a lot of blokes whose fathers reappeared once they were old enough to be more interesting/go boating with/down the pub. Makes my heart sink. Maybe someone else in the family can send something nice through the post as partial distraction, or you go out early to avoid the doormat waiting?
