Wednesday CC
The Wednesday Cricket Club is back, after a gap of 87 years. The old club has reformed. The legendary Wednesday Cricket Club, one of the city’s great sporting sides of the 19th and early 20th century, is to be reformed more than 85 years after it ceased to exist. The club, perhaps now best known for the football side its players set up as a winter pastime, is ironically being reconvened by Owls fans looking for a summer hobby. They’re big boots to fill of course – after being founded in 1820 The Wednesday CC were so good they soon became one of the county’s most widely respected amateur teams and provided two English players for the first ever Ashes series in 1877 The reformation of the Wednesday Cricket Club represents an opportunity for any enthusiasts to develop a club from bottom up. Our name gives us a real advantage and can be marketed with relative ease. It is our intention to work hand in hand with the Sheffield Childrens Hospital Charity. Players, individuals or groups can be accommodated in the relaunch of our famous old club. Initially we have a full fixture card in the Midweek Alliance League and a series of prestigious fund raising friendlies commencing on the 1st of May 2011 with a fixture at Thorncliffe CC. Nets at 7pm at Goodwin Sports Outdoor Nets.
