Why is Andrea Leadsom MP getting it wrong about cyclists?

Recommended Posts

If a gang of youths block your way for no reason it may be because they want to nick your bike. Would you hand over a month's wages, or would you want to put distance between you and the teenagers?

You would be as forgiving if a car driver plowed into them then?

And if you wanted to do that you would evade them and cycle off - you wouldn't shout at them then make no attempt to slow or evade. And that is of course even if the "gang of youths" did indeed block the riders way.

The police evidence is that Rhiannon stepped into the road. Would you stop and chat with some drunk teenagers when you are on a £4k bike?

We'll wait and see if Leadsom apologises for her dishonesty.

He chose to get away from some teenagers who had been drinking. A girl stepped into his path.

And the evidence that the girl stepped into his path? It's not even sure that the girl was in the road. If I may quote from the head of the CTC:

Mayne said CCTV footage wasn’t good enough to determine where the teenager was standing, in the road or on the footpath.

“But frankly,” said Mayne, “the behaviour of the cyclist was such that they (the police) could go ahead with the prosecution."

“He entered this little cul-de-sac at 20mph – they can prove the speed on the camera – barely slowed down, barely deviated and hit the girl.”

If this is your definition of being "a bit of an arse" you have some very screwy standards...

That's a serious allegation to suggest an MP was lying to the House of Commons. What evidence do you have? Links please?

The police evidence is that she was probably in the road - though that is not sure. There is certainly not anyone apart from you suggesting that she stepped into the path of the cyclist or that they appeared in any way threatening or drunk.

You defend 17 year old girls getting drunk and wandering in the road?

You defend mowing people down just because they are in the road?

Nobody's perfect, and you frequently moan about car drivers attitudes towards cyclists. You might want to reflect on your attitude on this thread if you ever inadverently find yourself "in the way" of a car. Will you expect them to run you down? Will you blame yourself for being in the way even if they did run you down? What if they shouted at you to get out of the way first, will you excuse the driver of putting you over their bonnet?
