syne
Unlawful is something that is against the law. illegal- is when you break a statute 'law' - a statute is; a rule given the power of law in a society that consents to it
HeadingNorth
The dictionary definitions are identical - "un-lawful" means "il-ilegal" means not lawful. "Illicit" has exactly the same meaning. Under English law, "unlawful" means you have no legal right to do it, but you may not necessarily be committing a crime: "illegal" means you are committing a crime. Or at least, so I'm told.
