Sheffield produces more steel than ever before?

Recommended Posts

The myth that our Steel Production has died off is untrue, according to Magna, so I was told recently?

Apparently, it produces more steel now than ever before in history, it's just the staffing levels that have been decimated, not actual steel output.

yes it is all automated nowadays, so you don't need the staff is what I heard.

To be fair I heard this fact a few years ago as well. I can't remember where I heard or read it so it could well be an urban myth. Or just possibly. It might just be true. Stranger things have happened

I heard it about 10-15 years ago. It probably is true. Rolling mills don't need men to push girders through, they require a button to be pressed nowadays.

It was wrong then and is even more wrong today! Btw 'Girders' have never been produced in Sheff in significant quantities as they are for construction purposes and are made of mild steels, not the type of steels that were made here.

Rotherham,Aldwarke works

Only makes around 500,000 tonnes pa now, but even when Aldwarke was producing much more it wasn't making as much as was produced at the original Rotherham Works, Templeborough. Neither of which are in Sheffield anyway!
