Bishops House - the future

Recommended Posts

You may have read in the press that management of Bishops House has been returned to the Council. The Friends Of Bishops House are in discussion with both Sheffield City Council and Museums Sheffield regarding the nature of our involvement in the future of Bishops House. A number of options are on the table and we will seek our members opinions on them when we have a clearer understanding of exactly what is involved.

Feel free to join us and discuss the issues on our forum

In April 2011, overall management of Bishops House returned to the Council from Museums Sheffield. One implication of this change will be a drastic reduction of public access to the House at weekends. The Friends Of Bishops House have been in negotiation with Sheffield City Council and Museums Sheffield over recent months. We are delighted to say that we have agreed terms with the Council (subject to members approval at the AGM) and will shortly be taking over management of the public opening of the House. Maintenance of the building will continue to be the responsibility of the Council.

Our first priority is to maintain public access at weekends. In order to achieve this, we need to find sufficient volunteers. Based on initial responses, we intend to open at dates to be finalised during the month, with the 1st Sunday of each month continuing to be an “open day” run by Museums Sheffield. This schedule should allow us to build up our volunteer pool whilst coming to terms with the many and various other tasks we will need to carry out. In order to prepare for the changeover, the House will be closed until Sunday the 29th. This will allow us time to train volunteers. We regret that the economic climate has brought about these changes, but we look forward to developing the house as an exciting community resource.

If you think that you may be able help us reach this objective by giving some of your time, as little as half a day per every month, please contact Nick Roscoe (volunteers@bishopshouse.org.uk) who would be delighted to hear from you. Full training will be given and appropriate insurance and resources will be in place.

This and many other issues will be discussed at our (first) AGM, to be held at St Paul Church & Centre, Norton Lees Lane, on Monday 16th May 2011, at 7.30. It’s vital we have as many people as possible attending, so we can get a feel for how you want us to proceed. Non-members are welcome but they won’t be allowed to vote unless they join in advance of day of the meeting.
