Is / have the white working class becoming more benefit dependant?

Recommended Posts

I remember this from University. If unemployment was 0% nobody would be able to expand because there would be nobody to fill vacancies, also wages would go through the roof because people would be able to name their price when going for a job which would in turn cause inflation, stifle business and hurt the economy.

Doesn't this expose the major flaw in the capitalist system?

The answer to this is in your question - the white working class are working, not on benefits... There are pockets of scroungers however, but to pretend that these people are new (there have always been slackers who have no intention of contributing) or that they are members of the working class, would be incorrect... There is a weird situation with those aged 14-19 now, where they seem to have been told in school to expect more out of their work than they will get - working when you first start out is boring, thankless and badly paid... Thing is, most of us knew this when we first started out, but today kids seem to think that their working lives will be more fulfilling and better paid...

This slacker mentality is a load of bull. Mentality is bred.

Legions of working people with lots of periods of short employment due to the turnover of business via bankruptcy. They then end up on benefits that can be higher than their wages.

Free healthcare when unemployed, but no sick pay, and prescription charges for workers.

A lot of low wage workers are unhealthy due to working poverty. Under labour, working poverty rose.

The person serving you a burger can't afford the dentist, no wonder their teeth are worse than someone on disability benefits with a higher income and free dental care. A day off sick could send them under.

If the people doing the right thing (working) get treat like ****, then end up unemployed and get treat quite well, its not surprising they fast become disillusioned with working.

Especially when the money you earn merely replaces housing and council tax benefit for a council house, housing association ex council house, or private rented ex council house.

Benefits guarantee a fairly substandard lifestyle.

Working in the current labour market doesn't even guarantee that!

And therein is the problem, and you can't blame people for taking the easy route. The system is at fault.

So your suggestion is to return to where we were at the time of the 2nd world war? Cut benefits to a absolute mimimum, allow those who don't want to work to wallow in the poverty of their own creation and the working classes will still be earning poor wages and dying earlier than those in high paid professional work?

There is no other solution - we either pay the idle to stay idle and allow them the same lifestyle as the working classes, or we starve them and hope that they will finally get up and work... They won't, they didn't before we had such a comprehensive benefits system, but we wouldn't be paying for them anymore...

Something the change to the benefits system is supposed to end.

I could be wrong, but someone on minimum wage will still receive benefits, do they not then qualify for free health treatment?

You can, but you're right, not working should be less pleasant than even the most poorly paid work.
