lakerman
Does anyone know the exact year that the Athol public house closed down? It was situated on Cross Burgess Street/ Pinstone Street
lazarus
I can remember going in in 1962, it was one of only two pubs in Sheffield that had a revolving door the other was the Kings Arms in Commercial St
sweetdexter
Terrible beer.I think it was Younger's,but we still went in. Last time was 1965. I remember the piano player, used to have a black Lab tied to the piano stool and was a snuff addict
crookesey
I recall when reading Derek Dooley's autobiography, that the Wednesday team used to have their pre home match meal there. I just can't imagine scoffing a three course meal before playing football. But hang on a minute, DD had a one in one goal to game scoring rate, that's where the current lot must be going wrong. mikeG
Only went in there once - about 1962 - wanted to see what Newcastle Brown did for me. I was impressed.
crookesey
I recall going in through the door on Burgess Street and going down some steps, as for what was there when I had climbed down them, I can't recall. However the company that I used to work for had business interests with the owner, the late Cyril Caplan. His office was the old silver service restaurant, honestly, other than for the absence of dining tables and chairs, it's exactly the same as it was. stevew
I'm sure I can remember going in the late 60's..........it would probably have been '68 or '69 with lads from college on the odd lunchtime to sample the Newcastle Brown which was excellent. peter bush
Lazarus - I remember the Kings Arms well with its revolving door. I think there was snooker table upstairs. It was a lovely town pub to take the girl friend in. The Athol had a tiny frontage. Easy to miss. Isnt the Yorkshireman closing now?
