Rich
whoever you vote for government wins Exactly, at the last Election I voted Lib Dem, and technically they got in, albeit in "coalition" with the Tories..
taxman
What are you talking about you madman? Do you think all union subscribers are going to strike because their union has voted to strike? Weren't they saying that striking won't change anything? If that's the case why is he so bothered if people do strike? It was a simple observation that all union members (theoretically) were given the chance to vote yes/no in an election that will affect millions of people but less than 50% did so. Apart from Muddycoffee's point about the problems getting ballot papers out I don't see why people would not want to have their say.

Yes. It's odd that the Trades Unions are often first to decry 'undemocratic' governments' action; yet, when it comes to their own members' voting in their own elections or strike ballots... But it wasn't trade unions who were threatening a law change to make results invalid unless there was a certain turnout.

True, but where's their strike mandate? Maybe the non-voters will [should?] work as normal.

And lawyers take action against unions for restrictive practices, despite the Law society being one of the most restrictive associations in the country with a polite version of the closed shop. When asking for conveyancing quotes bthey are ridiculously similar which means either perfect competion or restrictive practices in the form of informal collusion.Unions are required to achieve a simple majority and can have little influence over turn-out. Or, just possibly, they are more concerned about providing for their family and/or caring for vulnerable people in their charge rather than having a day shopping. Just a thought.
