Somali Pirates - Update

Recommended Posts

Interesting, care to elaborate?

There was no hint at any private sector solutions in the programme.

Floating prisons?

Cant elaborate as it is still an open tender and I have a vested interest. :)

I suppose when it has been fully developed and released, then everyone will know about it - especially the Pirates.

The only suggestion anybody made in the programme was to implement an exclusion zone off the coast of Somalia. Place a military vessel 12.5 miles off the cost of various ports, and sink anything that comes within range. It was proposed that once a couple of boats had been sunk piracy would stop, dead in its tracks.

The main reason for me starting this thread was because, after listening to the programme, I was peeved that there seems to have been little political urgency to sort this out.

There will be urgency, and it will get sorted I am sure. It's a shame that the kidnapping and torture of hundreds of African/Indian seafarers is not motivation enough, and it'll be the price of oil that probably results in action.

"If there was any fairness and justice in the world,"

Of course, I've always admired free markets and our government and, under their influence, had assumed that ruthless protection of our own interests was the only appropriate course of action. Somali pirates seem to feel the same way. Seems fair.

MJ Scuba,

Sovereign navies in action against pirates represents another level of socialising the risk of a private undertaking. Let the oil companies do their own policing. Of course, they have no particular moral compass and their actions would therefore make better viewing on TV.

This gets rather more interesting with every post. Some sort of weapon I would guess. At first I thought you might have hinted at it in your first post here:

But as I put down my copy of the FT this lunchtime, and picked up some oiks Mirror, I saw this:

http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/top-stories/2011/04/14/us-navy-creates-pirate-laser-115875-23059907/

SCIENTISTS have invented a laser gun that can destroy Somali pirates’ boats.

The ship-mounted beam set the engines of a boat on fire when tested by the US Navy last week.

The Office of Naval Research, who invented the weapon, says it can hit targets “miles” away and its strength can be set from “lethal to stun”.

Somali pirate attacks in the Pacific Ocean have become increasingly violent in recent months.

Great! Once the pirates have hijacked a ship with one of those on board, they can make the whole freakin' Indian Ocean a no-go zone!

lol, That may be one option, but there are obviously many, many anti piracy things being developed. I would hope that they are not all weapons of destruction.

Maybe I should put my hand up with my weapons of mass destraction. :hihi:

Dunno if you saw the video, but it took an age to start the fire.

What video? Scozzie's WMD or the laser one? There's no videos in either of those links.

Ah, after googling I think you mean this:

http://ca.news.yahoo.com/blogs/dailybrew/u-navy-laser-could-used-disable-small-boats-20110411-094332-978.html

Can't see how that can be any more useful than a gun. Just shoot them FFS.

I remember watching a documentary many years ago about the captain of a submarine. I think he was named after a fish in some Pixar film. Anyway, he had a good way of keeping angry natives off his boat. Perhaps we should give him a call?
