50 years ago this week. The first man in space.

Recommended Posts

On 12 April 1961, aboard the Vostok 3KA-3, Gagarin became both the first human to travel into space, and the first to orbit the earth.

Sadly the Russians did not look after their hero and he was killed in very bizzare circumstances in a plane crash 7 years later.

please elaborate on this, sounds interesting

Seems rather obvious to me.

Also, the Russian's refused to admit that Gagarin ejected on his return, so he could in turn claim the altitude record which demanded a landing.

Some suspicions surrounding his death too.

In fact, the conspiracy nutters are wasting their time directing their attention towards NASA. 1960's Russia must be an untapped goldmine for them. :hihi:

Serious respect to Yuri's bravery though, in undertaking a task in which he must have known his chances of survival were thin. What a fantastic smile as well, must have melted a few girl's hearts at the time.

That all seems like a total flight of fantasy. There is one rather obvious flaw in the conspiracy theory and that is that the Russian flights were monitored around the world, not least by our own Joderel Bank Telescope.

The Russians wanted everyone to know about the flight and made sure the world was aware of it so that there would be no denying it happened. So like Sputnik before it the entire flight was tracked by international observers. So unless a previous attempt had blown up on launch Gagarin was the first man to try. And if a previous attempt had blown up on launch they weren't in space anyhow.
