Why do we behave differently towards the rich?

Recommended Posts

It's what I pointed out at the start of the thread. Having money is not the problem, constantly ramming the fact that they have money down another person's throat is.
But isn't that the point of the OP? (putting aside issues of personality/trolling.etc.)

I.e. that a 'statement' car "constantly ramms the fact perception (corrected for factual accuracy ;)) that the car owner has money"?

Personally, in these days of company cars, lease options, big-metal-for-silly-money recession deals and (still-) cheap credit, I have an approach of "you car really does not tell me how wealthy you are".

In fact, quite the contrary: based on experience, I'm more wary of clients swanning around in e.g. Porsche SUVs and 7-series Beemers, than of clients in practical Mondeos or Vectras, as far as their ability/willingness to pay my bills are concerned :D

During the week I drive a fairly modest car and I give out and receive courtesy from other road users.

Come the weekend I fetch something rather more expensive and prestigious out of my garage.

I offer the same amount of courtesy to other road users as I do in my day to day ride, but the reaction from them is totally different. They will not let me out at junctions or they look at me with disgust when they pull up next to me. Ridiculous when you think about it!

This attitude towards the rich has been further pointed out by many people who post on here. Another current thread points out the habit of people calling anyone wealthier than themselves a "ten bob millionaire".

Is this simply a case of jealousy or is there some other reason for this hatred of success?

so what you are saying is that you are rich? Well sometimes ppl feel intimidated by the rich

Quite possibly. I think people are more ****** off with unemployed scroats from Strad posing as rich tbh.:hihi:

SF's rich tapestry I'm afraid.

These days you can lease an upmarket car for two/ three years no money down.

Driving around in a fancy car doesn't prove anything. Ted Turner the American billionaire who once owned CNN used to drive around in a cheap basic Toyota. In fact there are many many people whose net worth is around a million or more who never flaunt their wealth at all and you'd never guess to look at them that they are what they are.

Here we call people that lease upmarket cars "ten bob millionaires".

This has proved to be very interesting. Even though I was pretty sure that my theory was correct, I am shocked at how many people on here are jealous of wealth. I have experienced a lot of name calling simply for saying I have money, how bizzare!:)

One thing I have noticed amongst my wealthy peers is that none of them, including myself, call each other names for being wealthy. This is for the simple reason that we have nothing to be jealous of, we all have money.

For those of you who do suffer from envy, may I offer a little advice. Try not to get too wrapped up in what others have got, this can lead to bitterness if you are not achieving what you want. Concentrate on your own goals and remain focused and you WILL realise your dreams. Good luck.:)
