Coisley & Britton Hills, Woodhouse

Recommended Posts

Somewhat coincidently, they were each born at no. 10 - 10 Coisley Hill. 10 Britton Hill. Had no idea Britton Hill was Richmond Road....the no. of times I've walked up there! My Grandparents ended up in Birklands Avenue in Handsworth but we regularly visited the large park in Richmond (and the one in Handsworth). Grandad's name was Fred Andrews Lindley born 300821 and Nan was Joan Farrar born 280824. Fred was born to Doris but brought up as her brother. Andrews was apparently the surname of his father but no clue as to the father's christian name. Doris did get married and had other children. Nan had maybe 4 siblings including an older sister Marge (Margaret) and a brother Eric. Any infor would be appreciated. Grandad ended up working at Orgreave for 47 yrs until 1981 and Nan worked at Moore & Wrights (later James Neil now the Asda supermarket) in Handsworth for years. Thanks for the replies

Rec'd a copy of my Grandparents' Birth Certs today. One was born at Coisley Hill and one at Britton Hill. I'm pretty certain that my Nan's house was knocked down years ago and is just open grass (or it was about 15 years ago) but I'm trying to work out how far the two houses were away from each other? Also if anyone knows anything about the Booth, Farrar, Andrews or Lindley families from Woodhouse, I'd be grateful if they could contact me. My family tree until this morning stopped at my Grandparents. I now know my Great-Grandparents' names.

Coisley Hill is on maps it led onto Sheffield Rd, Woodhouse and Normanton Springs the other way. Most of the houses were knock down in the 1960's-70's, there are pictures. These were mostly terraced houses and some of the men worked at the nearby Birley East and Birley West Collieries. Family knew various Lindlay's from Coisley Hill, some moved onto nearby Linley Lane. One was a caretaker at Woodhouse Methodist Church up to the early 1980's, he was born in the 1900's and some of the children went to the Woodhouse West School and some of the men worked at Birley East Colliery before moving onto Brookhouse Colliery which is at Beighton

Coisley Hill and Richmond road are not far apart as I lived in between them and still do even though I am not still in the same house. I think that 10 Richmond road has been pulled down but houses on the opposite side are still standing. If you went to the big park at Richmond do you remember Normanton Springs as that is where coisley Hill up towards Woodhouse I can remember the houses there. The older people in Handsworth still call Richmond road Britton hill and I used to work at the co-op there in 1960 so may have known your Grandparents.

Handsworth historical society have lots of useful information at the museum in the parish centre. It used to open the 2nd monday in each month I think that it still does and they have old school records well worth a look .

I don't remember Normanton Springs. I know they were living in Birklands Ave Handsworth by at least 1954 as my dad was born then and I think they used to go to the Coop in Handsworth quite near the rec - long since closed. I would go to the museum but I live in Portsmouth, Hampshire and it's out of my geographical range as I'm on the heart/lung transplant list at Papworth - only allowed an hour radius.
