What happens when fake ID is taken away?

Recommended Posts

The City Centre SNA has piloted a scheme regarding misuse of ID, which is now nationally recognised. It is a criminal offence to use false or borrowed ID to gain entry to licensed premises or to buy alcohol, which can lead to a maximum fine of £5,000 or 10 years imprisonment.

Unfortunately under-18s who gain access to licensed premises frequently end up committing crime or becoming victims of crime. When this occurs the venue they were in are asked to account for how they have come to be there, and if it is a persitent problem could have their licence reviewed.

Door staff at venues have been given the power to seize IDs they believe have been fraudulently used under the Identity Cards Act 2006. They record the reasons why they have seized the ID and we collect them on a weekly basis.

All seized IDs are logged and a letter is then sent out to the individual to whom the ID belongs advising that they will be sent back to the issuing authority. This prevents young people from being criminalised whilst sending out a firm message regarding ID misuse.

So far this year over 350 IDs have been seized. In virtually all cases those people who have contacted us following receipt of a letter have admitted to being aware that they have been involved in ID misuse.

Anyone with concerns regarding seizure of ID can contact the City Centre SNA on 0114 2523996.
