Is anyone else looking forward to the Royal Wedding?

The point I am making (Uptowngirl) is when I have a bit of a lookabout on various media websites about the wedding coverage and see that the consensus is that it probably wont attract as many viewers as Charles and Di's wedding, you backing up what you said (at least a 1/4 of the worlds population are expected to watch it) by posting a link to a wedding-obsessed website whose source of information is a survey on an american website called anythinghollywood.com is not good in the credibility stakes.

To put it simply, you haven't convinced me that at least a quarter of the world's population will be watching it.

Now divide that number by 196 (the number of countries in the world), now divide that by an approximation of the number of regional TV channels each country has (say 10). That means an average of approx 7 channels per region, per country. Not a lot of TV channels, when you think about it.

Considering I live in the UK, and have seen the listings for Friday, I'd say there's pretty much nothing else on on Friday afternoon from 14:00 till 16:00.

So what would you normally be moaning about not watching if there wasn't a royal wedding for you to moan about not watching?

Incidentally according to Greenpeace there are 2 billion people in the would who do not have access to electricity. Just think if they had invented clockwork TVs the world viewing figures could be even higher.

Time will tell who is right. However, however many people around the world do tune in it will be one of the largest, if not the largest, for any event ever. So for the anti-monarchists to try claiming that no one is interested is plainly stupid.

And by the way, there are many other sources claiming up to 2 billion viewers. Perhaps you should just shop around.

MORE than two billion people around the world are expected to watch the Royal Wedding.

That compares with roughly 750million who saw at least part of the coverage of Prince Charles' marriage to Princess Diana in 1981.

Friday's coverage will be far wider thanks to the internet and in most countries it will be live on at least one TV channel.

Here is how the ceremony will unfold abroad.

US: Four main networks are sending top hosts to London. Estimated viewers: 140million.

RUSSIA: Most enthusiastic non-English speaking country. Estimated viewers: 51.5million.

S AFRICA: BBC coverage will be available across the country. Estimated viewers: 15million.

AUSTRALIA: Republican feeling at lowest level for almost 20 years. Estimated viewers: 6.6million.

CANADA: Interest high, except in French-speaking east. Estimated viewers: 8.6million.

FRANCE: Republican nation fascinated by our Royal Family. Estimated viewers: 15.1million.

BRAZIL: Most interested of South American countries. Estimated viewers: 38.1million

MALI: The wedding is definitely not the topic on everyone's lips. Estimated viewers: 690,000.

I think what the anti-monarchists are trying to say is that in these times of hardship for a lot of people, it is a bit obscene for these two spoilt members of the upper classes to be flaunting their wealth (mostly at our expense as well) in so obvious a way.

If you put public executions on the TV, loads of people would watch them but it doesn't make it right.

And if you can show me a credible source that at least 2 billion viewers watched the farce on the day I will gladly donate £100 to Sheffield Children's hospital.

Can't say fairer than that, can you?

Your move!

Oddly enough I don't remember anyone getting so high and mightly about chav wedding's like that of the Beckham's. Prince Charles is paying for the wedding and the cost of security for all the dignitaries will be more than covered by the income generated for the country. So why all the negativity.

The event will gain massive publicity for the UK. I particularly liked this article..

TV experts say the happy occasion will dwarf records for a worldwide audience for a single event. The two billion estimate will be double the number who watched the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

It is also three times the audience who tuned in for Charles and Diana’s 1981 wedding. There will be another 400m people across the world keeping up with events via live streaming, radio and Twitter. Coverage of the event will be shared between the BBC, ITV and Sky.

There is no point at all in your little wager, because people like you wouldn't accept any figures that didn't support their own pre-conceived opinions.

You don't beleieve that one in every three people the world over are going to drop what they are doing to watch a bunch of hooray Henry's from a now politically insignificant former empire parading about in their glad rags?

I am finding it really sad watching the lead up to the wedding. These are real people getting married because they love each other (I presume) and the press are having the big fight to get the first and best pics. The tea towel manufacturers are making a bomb. It is like because they are "the royal family" we have a right to be a part of their lives. These are the actions that ultimately killed Princess Diana. Let's stop paying for the royal family. Leave them alone to live their lifes and just get on with it. What have they done recently to act as the ambassadors they are meant to? Their numerous vehicles are damaging the ozone and the cost of the bodyguards is killing the economy (not just that of course but is obviously a major factor!)

I'm sure you can guess I am not watching the wedding!!
