Interesting Apocolyptic scenario theories

Recommended Posts

SO there's plenty of the same old same old conspiracy theories on here that people have known about for years, they get a bit repetative and the evidence given is very limited and thus the material for discussion soon runs out, turning the thread into a bickering session ie,

"IT'S TRUE!"

"show us then"

"THE TRUTH IS ALREADY OUT THERE!"

"you're not going to are you, you're a fool"

"YOU ARE A FOOL FOR NOT SEEING THE FACTS THAT ARE THERE!"

If you've read or taken part, you'll understand what I mean.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Apocolyptic scenarios are similar but I think there's much more interesting debate to be had, as there are some plausible "what if" theories. If you have any, please put them forward.

My favourite is the possibilty of a real zombie apocolypse caused by nanobots, I stumbled upon this by accident, it's on a comedy site (hardly a factual source) but it makes (entertaining) sense in my VERY limited understanding of nanotechnology!

A rogue state using a small number of nukes as EMP weapons.

If you explode a nuclear bomb in the atmosphere, about 200 miles up, it produces what is known as the Compton Effect.

Researchers concluded that the electrical disturbance was due to the Compton effect, theorized by physicist Arthur Compton in 1925. Compton's assertion was that photons of electromagnetic energy could knock loose electrons from atoms with low atomic numbers. In the 1958 test, researchers concluded, the photons from the blast's intense gamma radiation knocked a large number of electrons free from oxygen and nitrogen atoms in the atmosphere. This flood of electrons interacted with the Earth's magnetic field to create a fluctuating electric current, which induced a powerful magnetic field. The resulting electromagnetic pulse induced intense electrical currents in conductive materials over a wide area.

During the cold war, U.S. intelligence feared the Soviet Union would launch a nuclear missile and detonate it some 30 miles (50 kilometers) above the United States, to achieve the same effect on a larger scale. They feared that the resulting electromagnetic burst would knock out electrical equipment across the United States.

(The scenario mentioned above can be seen in the BBC film "Threads", where the Soviets explode a bomb over the North Sea prior to their main attack, knocking out electrical systems across Northern Europe.)

All modern electrical circitry would be burnt out by an EMP burst (including anything connected to surge protectors and the like).

It is possible to "harden" equipment against such a pulse but it's usually only military electronics that are protected in this way.

An EMP attack is a great way for a nation or group of individuals with limited resources to cause damage far beyond what 2 or 3 nuclear bombs could do if exploded on the ground.

Although the electric field created from an EMP lasts for only a short time, its effects can be devastating. It is predicted that a single high altitude burst 200 miles above Kansas could propagate an EMP enveloping the entire United States. Electrical systems connected to things that can conduct current like wires, antennas, and metal objects will suffer significant damage. EMP effects on electronics include interference of radio frequency links, irreparable damage to microcircuits, and even the disabling of satellites. Fortunately, electronic equipment that is turned off is less likely to be damaged.

Given the proliferation of electronics in every aspect of our modern lives, the effects would be devastating. Cars, buses and lorries wouldn't start. No refrigeration, no internet, no phones, no ATM machines, no way to use debit or credit cards, no electric lighting or heating.

No Sheffield Forum! :o

If that's not apocalyptic, I don't know what is.

sky net will destroy the world.

We've managed to dodge that cyborg related bullet as the date predicted by the T-850 that Skynet would become active was April 19th, with the nuclear attack happening 2 days later on the 21st.

I bet that you're relieved eh?

Different measure of time.

Hoisting a nuclear device 200 miles up and then detonating it is well beyond the ken of any 'rogue state' so we should be safe enough until the planets align in 2012 when the Space Goat will be set free from Venus.

If anyone is worried about the Space Goat I know a man who can get you tickets for the B Ark that will take you to a safe planet.

Some good ones here - including a robot takeover.

THERE'S A PYRAMID WITH THE ALL-SEEING EYE IN THE OPENING SEQUENCE!

Is there something you're not telling us Longcol? :suspect:

Actually, your link reminded me of the BBC docu-drama thingy End Day, which is great and I may have to watch it later tonight.

(I liked the large hadron collider one)
