Strix
for any particular reason? nowadays a change at Doncaster is an equally viable travel option, so would that affect the answer you're looking for?
Johnkb
Hi Thanks for the response. I am writing a biography of my great Grand father Albert Edward Bird. He was a "ped" professional runner and in 1869 he travelled to Edinburgh and I would like to have an idea as to how he may have travelled between theses cities. I thought it may have been by train. regards John
Strix
if he did, he didn't catch the train at sheffield midland station, as that only opened the year after. He could have started his journey at sheffield victoria (if a route was available) still looking...
Strix
this is looking slightly messy the east coast main line had a big chunk missing out of it until 1871 that isn't a conclusive 'no' though. at that time there were lots of small railway companies, which were later shut down, so that requires some digging (google pre-beeching)
Cycleracer
Queen Victoria travelled to Edinburgh by train to stay in Pitlochry in that time not sure if it was a direct route or if she came through Sheffield.
