mattleonard
The governments a large employer and contractor, if it cutsback, less people in work to pay tax or spend on the ecconomy. Mmmm... I'm pretty sure the government doesn't make any profit through tax it gets back on salaries and contracts. If it did, then there need never be any economic problems ever again. Unless we give all the profit to India, Pakistan and anyone that comes cap in hand to our doorstep, whilst our own citizens stuggle to make ends meet. metaphoria
I think this thead is a bit pre-empt, with an undertone of hopefulness. Perhaps saying it makes it almost true.

No, that's not going to make any difference to whether the government makes a profit through the taxes it gains on government salaries and contracts. mattleonard
Not unless they introduce a tax rate of >100%. But i think by that point it ceases to be taxation, and becomes slavery.
Mecky
No, that's not going to make any difference to whether the government makes a profit through the taxes it gains on government salaries and contracts. So that means governments run at a loss regardless, therefore, how can the government criticise the previous administration? Bloody hypocrites. No, it simply means that the more public-service jobs and contracts is obviously not going to result in more tax-revenues. In order for that to be the case, workers and contractors would have to be paid less than they will pay in tax. Would you really want to work on such a basis?
