Its been played for several years now and this month the US has finally put IRAN in 'check'! Well if you have heard of them, the US military certainly knows a heck of a lot more. 100 mile range is negligible. The US has sea launched Cruise missiles with 1000 - 3000 km range, depending on the type. So their ships don't have to be anywhere near a Sunburn launch site. Airplanes can also deliver Cruise, so that's got the plane's range plus missile range. Airplanes can also deliver Cruise, so that's got the plane's range plus missile range.Iran has diesel-electric subs (Kilos), which are Sunburn (SSN22) launch-capable. So, it's a credible threat, as these puppies are really very quiet (even compared to a nuke sub). How effective a threat, would depend on how good the Iranian sub crews are at sneaking, how good the US crews are at ASW, and environmental conditions (the red sea/gulf region is fairly shallow, which I understand makes sub hunting somewhat more difficult ...back to my Clancy's for a check ).
