Information on James Dixon Marks

Recommended Posts

I'm hoping someone may be able to clarify some information on James Dixon & Sons marks. My aunt purchased a pair of plated candlesticks when she was stationed in London during World War II. They are marked 780, J D & S and with PNS in a shield. (There is also a small mark above the 780, but I can't make it out). From the research that I've done, it looks like they were made by James Dixon & Sons. As the mark is PNS for plated nickel silver and not EPNS for electro plated nickel silver, can I assume the candlesticks were made between 1836 and 1848 (the period when Dixon used nickel silver, but before they began electro-plating)? I wasn't sure if the PNS mark would have been used after 1848.

Also, any idea what the 780 would refer to? Is it a style number?

Many thanks for any assistance.
