Is this true? Israel attacked USS Liberty?

Recommended Posts

Both sides investigated the attack at the time; both concluded that it was a horrible mistake. The Israeli government paid a whomping lump sum as compensation (not that this is ever any consolation to families of the deceased.)

The usual conspiracy theorists have been arguing ever since that it was deliberate, and not a mistake.

There is more to it as those survivors recount the events- as usual, it was covered up as an 'accident' and even the American media did not go in to overdrive in reporting the callous attack.

The Israeli lobby controls America- America is its slave.

Sheflad - How can this be - it was a war situation, mistakes happen. At least that time is was the Septics on the receiving end. Their trigger happy A-10 pilots have more than made up for it over the years though, "Blue on Blue" being their standard operating procedure No. 1?

And to be fair, so did members of the crew of the Liberty and the president at the time, Lyndon Johnson

From the Chicago Tribune

The transcript published by the Jerusalem Post bore scant resemblance to the one that in 1967 rolled off the teletype machine behind the sealed vault door at Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha, where Steve Forslund worked as an intelligence analyst for the 544th Air Reconnaissance Technical Wing, then the highest-level strategic planning office in the Air Force.

"The ground control station stated that the target was American and for the aircraft to confirm it," Forslund recalled. "The aircraft did confirm the identity of the target as American, by the American flag.

"The ground control station ordered the aircraft to attack and sink the target and ensure they left no survivors."

Forslund said he clearly recalled "the obvious frustration of the controller over the inability of the pilots to sink the target quickly and completely."

"He kept insisting the mission had to sink the target, and was frustrated with the pilots' responses that it didn't sink."

Nor, Forslund said, was he the only member of his unit to have read the transcripts. "Everybody saw these," said Forslund, now retired after 26 years in the military.

Remember that at that time the US were not Israel's main ally/backer, the French were. The US were definitely not Israel's main arms supplier in '67, not much Israeli equipment was of modern US origin, most of it was UK or French, with WW2 US surplus.

Phanerothyme - tinfoil hat stuff methinks.

Because someone is recalling reading a teletype message in '67. Where did the teletype message originate from? Who typed the teletype message? Was the typist unbiased or part of some sort of skulduggery on the US side? How good is the recallee's memory? Is there anything else to substantiate this claim?

It's usually the simplest explanation that is the truth. The whole incident was a tragic error.

And of course it was a deliberate attack, the Israelis thought it was an Egyptian ship they were attacking, it being the Six Day War and all.

Woohoo, a 100 posts!
