soft ayperth
Many of those holiday camps were former WW2 army bases. They were even run in a regimental style, with Wakey Wakey early morning calls and drills, mess hall type eating facilities, and programmed events. For some reason, people back then used to like it. patto
Still go to a 50's style camp. Wooden chalets and a modern clubhouse. Up till mid 90's the ex RAF man who bought it after the war and converted it to holiday accomodation used to have a last waltz with his wife and campers last thing every night before closing. Been sold on now but it's still a fun place to visit every year.
GOLDEN OLDIE
does anyone remember the different 'houses' in the 1950s? York, Lancaster etc with the different areas of the dining room painted in 'house' colours' And the nobbly knees, talent, bonny baby, lovely legs contests? In the 1960s 'guards' patrolling the walkways to make sure noone of the opposite sex visited your chalet? And strangely of all considering todays news items - 'Baby crying in chalet number---' which would come over the tannoy and onto the cinema screens?
