Leah-Lacie
Are you sure about that one? I was under the impression that as soon as you work, you pay everything A few years ago, I was a single parent, on income support. JC did me a 'better off calculation' and they said if I worked 16-20 hours on min wage, which was about £4ph at that time, I would get my wages, then get my wages more or less doubled with working tax credits, plus about 95% of my housing benefit still paid (although I lived with mum and didn't claim it, they calculated it for me anyway) If you work full time, I'm sure the figures would be very different. Leah-Lacie
I do know that a lot of full time workers are unaware that they can claim some element of tax credits, a friend (single man) gets £20 from it, and another friend (married) gets £25... Not exactly sure how that works
caparo
Not if the minimum wage is 24k It would because the frozen chickens would be £45 each.
Mister M
Apart from anything else, with a minimum wage of £24,000 I'd have a bit of a bet on inflation shooting up... Rapidly followed by a hike in interest rates on mortgages... So much of telly & papers are taken up with worshipping at the altar of wealth, it's threads like this that remind me that rather than dump on those who are low paid, society should hold them in higher esteem. Given that they help keep prices for everyone low (by not bargainning for higer wages) and they do the jobs that others aren't prepared to do. Cyclone
I just tried the benefit calculator for a single minimum wage earning man of my age with no children. Working Tax Credit £51.87 per week That's what can be claimed apparently. Total weekly income £241.75 per week Now he's become unemployed Council Tax Benefit £14.35 per week Jobseeker's Allowance (Contribution based) £67.50 per week Total weekly income £81.85 per week Still doesn't get any HB apparently... Don't know why, I expected him to qualify as he's now claiming JSA.

Leah-Lacie
He should qualify for HB if claiming JSA... Depending on your age, that would either be one bedroom rate, or shared accommodation rate.
Cyclone
Interesting This imaginary guy is now only working 20 hours a week and found himself somewhere cheaper to rent You may be able to claim the following benefit(s), which we have estimated for you: Housing Benefit £49.46 per week Council Tax Benefit £4.85 per week Earnings £120.00 per week Total weekly income £174.31 per week I don't understand why he couldn't have the HB when he was unemployed claiming JSA though... Weird.
Cyclone
It looks like he's better off working anyway, even on minimum wage. http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Diol1/DoItOnline/DoItOnlineByCategory/DG_172666 If you want to have a go
