Should Schools stay open longer ?

Recommended Posts

They`re in every town and most villages. They are warm, dry and a place to learn, exercise, socialise or just pass the time. They belong to you and me, and yet they are only open about 7 hours each day Monday to Friday.

Wouldn`t it be a good idea for schools to be open from 8am to 10pm seven days each week, even through holidays. (Excepting Dec 25, 26, Jan 1, Easter Sun, Mon.)

All the equipment is there, the gym and the pool, net ball and tennis court etc. for those wishing to exercise. A library for those wanting to quietly read or carry out research. And I`m sure there will be a room where people can brew a pot of tea and socialise.

Also pupils who don`t feel they are keeping up with their work can stay extra hours.

There`s a great need for somewhere to go during the long winter nights and schools fit the bill perfectly. It would give teenagers somewhere to go other than roaming the streets. Some out of work teenagers cannot afford their local sports clubs so visits to school out of hours would be without charge.

I know that teachers will be up in arms about this suggestion, but its not their school, they only work there. Its our school !

As for who will pay for overseeing this ! Just watch the do-gooders turning up in their hundreds offering to supervise without pay.

Come on ! Open up the schools.

It is a nice idea, however I suspect the logistics of doing so would be difficult. For instance, the school would have to do a H&S audit, employ extra staff (or get volunteers), inform their insurers, etc.

If it takes off - great, but if it doesn't, it could become a bit of a burden.

Actually, I always thought it'd be a good idea for schools to be open to the whole community instead of us creating so many divides and segregating so much

why can't cookery classes, woodwork, metalwork etc be available to adults between 5pm and 8pm?

How about basic language classes - aimed at people going on holiday?

The sports thing is a very good point too (I went to a school in Lincolnshire that was attached to a sports centre so the school got better facilities, but the rest of the town used it too)

Youth clubs used to be run on school premises too

That's a great idea. Just the sort of thing that Further Education colleges used to do before all the funding went to the 16 - 19 year olds.

What ever happened to Lifelong Learning?

The teachers could run it instead of having half the year off.

Thats shown you never learnt much;13 out of 52 is one quarter, giving you an error margin of 100%.

People like you are an excuse to to keep children at school longer. With your maths you might well be there till pension age
