RE teacher Gary Smith's Muslim attackers jailed

Recommended Posts

I haven't seen any condemnation from moderate Muslims regarding this. I would think that a large number of them are tacitly in favour of it, or at least not prepared to condemn it without caveat.

does that apply when 'ordinary' people burgle etc and other 'ordinary' people don't voice their condemnation?

why should people go out of their way to 'condemn' someone they've never heard of, will never meet, and have nothing to do with just because they happen to call god by the same name?

what form of 'condemnation' would you want to see? should christians, jews, sikhs etc do the same? should atheist go around 'condemning' any non-believing criminal who commits a crime?

This East London Mosque?

East London Mosque keeps on lying

The East London Mosque, that legendary home of tolerance and moderation, has condemned a series of posters which have appeared in its local area, Tower Hamlets, containing a Koranic invocation and declaring the borough a “gay-free zone.” Dilowar Khan, the mosque’s director, was quoted in a council press release saying: “We stand together with our fellow citizens against all forms of hatred, including homophobia. We are committed to building strong and cohesive communities in Tower Hamlets, and our strength is that we will not let incidents of hate divide us.”

As so often, however, the East London Mosque speaks with forked tongue. Yesterday, it was due to demonstrate its deep commitment to “standing together against homophobia” by hosting a gala dinner with one Uthman Lateef, a homophobic preacher who has stated: “We don’t accept homosexuality… we hate it because Allah hates it.”

Mr Lateef is one of at least half a dozen homophobic preachers hosted or promoted by the East London Mosque, three of whom have been officially invited to deliver the Friday sermon. In 2007, as my Dispatches programme on the East London Mosque disclosed, a “Spot The Fag” contest was staged at the mosque. In recent years, there has been a sharp rise in homophobic hate crimes in Tower Hamlets – something which simply cannot be unconnected to the fact that hatred of gay people is allowed to be openly and regularly expressed inside one of the area’s most prominent institutions.

it's an Indeterminate Public Protection order( you might want to double check that). you get a minimum to serve and a ceiling of 99 years.

after your minimum it's up to the jailers, judges etc to decide if you're no longer a threat to the public. if you still are then you can, theoretically do the whole 99.

they wanted to squash them as they're a nightmare for the jails as they can't budget how many inmates they'll have at any one time. a lot of people also fall through the cracks. and, they are particularly harsh as you can't plan anything seeing as you don't know when you're coming out.

besides, there's no point saying 'you can do 2 years or 99'.

IPP - Imprisonment for Public Protection is what it means. They are reserved for the most serious of offences and then the court has to jump through a number of hoops before it can pass one. The sentence of 5 years is the period of time to be served before they are even considered for release. They will be considered by the parole board, its nothing to do with judges at that point, and of course the nature of the offence and previous history is considered as well as how they have behaved within the custodial setting. It is exceptionally difficult to be released from this type of sentence because by its nature the sentence has been passed because you represent a serious risk of causing serious harm in the future. In this case any continued extreme views about religion will not help an early release.

Positive and negative on this forum seems more to do with argumentative ego skills and how each perform with each other. I don't see how the terms can be associated in relation to the crime and/or sentence.

As far as pandering to their religion in prison then IMO that should be completely removed, all religions. Either that or ram religion down their throats every hour their awake, that'll show who's committed to their faith. My guess is a lot of drop-outs.

they were only caught because MI5 was bugging them as terror suspects.

also the only connection any of them had was that one of them's nieces was getting taught at the school. Very tenuous. It's only a short step from that for them to just target any non-Muslim RE teacher. These guys are terrorists. You don't have to walk around wearing a suicide belt to qualify. They deserve to be locked up for a long time.

Five years is nothing. They will be out long before that anyway, due to the HRA. Plus they will be pandered to in prison anyway, with their special dietary requirements catered to, and their right to pray given special status.

Do you know what indeterminate sentences mean? They are similar to a life sentence where only after you have served the tarrif, in this case 5yrs you may be considered for release but in reality will end up serving between 6-10 years.

English prisoners get pork for meals so why can't muslims get halal food while inside?

You don't get a right to pray in jail, Friday is prayer day for muslims and Sunday is prayer day for Christians in jail.
