Obama’s recent speech in the UK got me thinking about what America has actually contributed to the world. Helping Europe defeat Hitler seems to be about the only positive contribution of the United States that I can think of.

The rest seem to be negative, Wiping out the Native Americans to create the USA, Importing slaves to build the country, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Vietnam, American military bases across the world, The war crime better known as Israel, creation of the Taliban, Guantanamo Bay, Iraq and Afghanistan, Drone bombings in Pakistan, fast food obesity, pornography, gang violence.

Don't get me wrong there are some great cities in America but to the poor of America and wider world can America really be considered as the outstanding example of freedom justice and equal rights Obama talks about? Is Obama living in cloud cuckoo land?

could say the nuclear deterrent has prevented any further world wars, and there's Bill Gates aswell ( if no ones mentioned him already that is) without whom SF would not maybe even exist !

Yes! I dind't want to use the word nicer, but mellowing is good. :)

Many of the boards Americans seem incapable of realising that it's perfectly possible for posters like Jimmy or myself to be highly critical of certain aspects of US foreign and domestic policy without in any way hating America.

As such when you see Jimmy pointing out positive contributions the US has made to the world you see him as 'different' when it's just this thread has revealed to you a side of him you were incapable of conceiving.

I've said it before in this thread and I'm going to say it again. The world has contributed more to America than America has contributed to the world. More than any other country I can think of' date=' America is a mish-mash of outside influences.[/quote']America didn't invent everything, it imported the kind of people who could invent, or take other countries inventions, and develop them like no other place on earth that had the drive and courage to develop them. It upsets Brits when we say we had the first jet liners, the 707 and the DC8. That's not true, the Comet was, but ours didn't fall apart in the air and kill people. Russian airliners still do, and so do Airbuses. The germans invented the car, but Ford made them affordable. Thomas Edison is all ours. Alexander Graham Bell was Scottish but invented the telephone with America in mind while in Canada. I could go on but it would take too long. I'm able to write this world wide now partly because of a rich nerdy guy from Seattle, Washington, and you are able to reply because of the same guy.
