Dress shopping grrrrrr

Recommended Posts

Well..... I have been today to look at dresses and have been met with some if the most unhelpful rude people I have ever had the misfortune to meet.

I have booked my wedding with the Sheffield deal of the day offer and now my wedding is a lot closer than we first planned (November), so I need to get a wriggle on finding a dress.

1st stop, blushes at bottom of bramhall lane. There were two brides trying on dresses, I was accosted as soon as I got through the door. 'have you got an appointment?' I said no and that I would just like to look at the dresses. I was then told, ' you have to have a member of staff to look at dresses, and an appointment. We can't see you for another two weeks. I left.

2nd stop, berkatex bride at the top of the moor. Again asked if I had an appointment and when my wedding was. When I mentioned it was November the lady said to the other assistant 'oh another one who's left it too late'. I left.

3rd attempt and the worst.... Francesca at castle square.

Went in at 1.50 and there wasn't one person in the place. The lady asked what we wanted, then said we could look but not try on without an appointment. Whilst I had a look at the dresses she was on the phone, to someone she obviously knew well, discussing how she had been docked money for this and that, going for drinks and various other bits. I stood there for 20 mins waiting for her to finish so I could ask her about the dresses.

When she eventually finished I asked why I couldn't try on there and then, by this time it was 2.25. She said she had another bride in at 3!!

If she'd actually concentrated on me instead of her phonecall, she might have been able to help me as I'd been in the shop plenty of time before the next bride.

All in all a bad day:rant:

Ugh- the main reason I was put off dress shopping in shops (that and the lack of money!). I went to New York brides in Eckington (sells samples) and the lady running it is lovely! Unfortunately there wasn't much that suited me in my size (!) and she took my details to call me at the beginning of April. She never did, but it's just as well as I ended up ordering mine (a copy) from an eBay seller (also known as Landybridal), and luckily I love it. Made to measure (all except I measured myself about a foot too long somehow!), and all for about £110. Good luck with shopping, I am sure some of these bridal shop staff have a stick up their arse, not quite sure why though? I think I'd have told them exactly what I thought of them! How rude.

I was close to venting my anger with the last one!! She really <removed> me off, but she lost them a sale.... Mind you, I don't think they would care.

Went to eckington too, she was lovely, but like you there was only a couple I could get into!! They were lovely, but by the time I'd paid for alterations they wouldn't have been any cheaper :-(

La bella brides in chapletown were lively, I couldn't try on today but they were really helpful and sorted me an appointment.

I may investigate the e bay option, as funds are low xxxx

Francesca's is where my step-daughter went. Firstly she had an appointment, then was told that the assistant helping her wasn't the one who usually did dresses, so didn't have a clue. Add to that they told her that whatever she chose would take 6 weeks or more to come from China, well, you get what I'm saying <grin>

as for myself, as a "larger" lady I went to a specialist shop to try different styles .. not a chance, they're all the same and looked awful. Fortunately my tastes are simple so I designed my own and made it, just a simple medieval style and it looks heaps better than the shop ones :D

Mmm another one of my gripes!! I'm not a skinny girl either...

Why are all the samples size 12/14?? I can't get me leg in half of em so how am I meant to know how I will look in it!!

Would it not make sense to have samples in the larger sizes, you can always pull em in to see how they would look if you're thinner.....

I found it difficult dress shopping but for a different reason. Most brides want a "wow" dress, perhaps a princess style dress, big, ruffles, diamantés and that's fine if that's your style but it's not what I wanted. I was made to feel odd for wanting something simpler.

I agree about the dress sizing, isn't the average size in the UK a size 16? You would have thought that there would be at least some size 16s knocking about in the shops.

That's a shame you had a bad experience. When I went to Berketex in January (without an appointment and before we'd even set a date) they were very accomodating and let me try on loads of dresses until I found the perfect one. Good luck in your search :)

Unfortunately its a little known thing how important appointments seem to be.

I don;'t think I had a bad experience dress shopping, evemn though I was really only shopping for samples, not the big ticket dresses.

I went to Blissful Daze, Avorio, Choola, Freya Bridal and Emily Bridal (where I got my dress) and had a great experience in them all.

Also went to New York Brides with a friend who got married last year and that's a great shop too.
