Should poor people be allowed to grow their own food?

Recommended Posts

The unemployed, low wage workers, asylum seekers whom are forbidden from working legally and fellow European/A2 nationals who are denied access to the social safety net.

My Bold:= I don't agree that there are genuine asylum seekers, economic migrants yes, people who pass over less atractive but safe countries are not asylum seekers

You can grow your own in pots,

Suppose you don't have a council house with a garden.

Suppose you don't have a plot of land of your own.

Suppose you have none at all or very little window space for natural sunlight.

Suppose you don't have an allotment.

Where can you put your pots to grow food!

What with rising food prices the need to grow food is increasing by the day!

Perhaps we should use the parks if we cannot use idle land.

Surely man should be allowed to grow food upon the common land?

Suppose live in a hole, in the dark !

Suppose you have no arms and legs and can't use tools !

Suppose the floor of your hole is radioactive and the seeds mutate and the plants attack you !!!

Or maybe, just maybe plenty of people in public and private rented houses with gardens can't be arsed to grow their own veg. If its 10% of houses that grow their own I'd be staggered.

Change the record man !!!

The allotment waiting lists are massive!

People want to grow food but they can't.

Food prices keep rising, these people can't do anything about it. in a free-market they would have access to land, could grow their own and bring prices down!

Change the record - what are you a slave? Change the system dude.

People should be able to grow food. Without the ability to grow food one has no control over his life. everybody should be free to grow food to feed their family.

take a drive through any of the poorer areas of sheffield and see how many have overgrown little gardens, broken cars/furniture dumped.

there's plenty of spare land to grow on. the reason "some" of the poor dont grown their own veggies is that they are do damn lazy.

If people are determined to grow their own food to feed their family, it might be an idea, and I'm just spitballing here, to move from a block of flats in one of the uks biggest cities.

How many on the waiting list DO have access to their own land and just don't want to take up the decking and move the ornamental pond ? And how long is the list anyway ???

Where to? Many houses with gardens got demolished under pathfinder!

Impossible to tell.

According to the Allotment Waiting List report for 2011 (naslg.com) there are 57 people waiting per 100 plots in the UK. That adds up to more than 86,000 people in the UK whose dreams of digging for victory are on hold. The report also included plenty of anecdotal evidence that, in common with you, many would-be diggers are being told by councils that there is little or no point going on waiting lists. Not necessarily true. There are quirks with these lists – for example, people often put their name down for more than one allotment in different areas but stay on a list after they've got one. If discrepancies were cleared up and lists better managed, you might move up quite a few spaces. Some have become so desperate that they are turning to private allotment schemes such as that offered by the thenewallotmentcompany.com, where you can rent growing space.

There is nearly as many people waiting as there is plots, we desperately need plots. And the council have power to provide them. They can seize private land to be used as allotments for the public good under the allotments and smallholdings act 1908. But unfortunately there is no time limit for them to provide allotments, THERE SHOULD BE!

what chemist wants is always the same in all of this posts.

he wants poor people to have priority over things. or to have things given to them.

I want people to have access to land. Land belongs to us all. We should all have opportunity to use it!

People who own land or have access to land aren't poor. They are rich beyond their wildest dreams and too dumb to know it. They should be taxed so that they give up their land to people prepared to use it!
