We are spending £6million a week bombing Libya, so why the cutbacks?

Recommended Posts

Can anyone explain why we are involved in Libya?

Why didn't we let them sort it out amongst themselves?

And before anyone says "it's all about oil", actually it isn't. The UK had very good oil deals with the Libyan government and very good deals for British based countries to take advantage of future exploration and production.

So why are we there, destroying all our good ties to Libya?

Because intervening was the right thing to do. If you saw a man in the street beating up a child, and you were big enough to do something about it, would you just stand aside and do nothing? The Libyan government were killing civilians and we are big enough to do something about it, so we should.

Too right ! we cant go on being the world's policeman. We need a president who runs on an "America First' ticket. This lot we have now have money for every tom dick and harry and at the same time cutting education, health and other benefits

Absolute madness !

We weren't talking about foreign aid though, we were just talking about the cost of executing some military intervention, 6mill/week is pretty low really, given the cost of a single cruise missile...

But if you want to talk about foreign aid, consider the benefits of it as well as the cost, how else can you make a reasoned judgement? It's cheaper to give aid and build schools and have a grateful country somewhere, than it is to do nothing, watch it slide into extremism and then have to fight a war with them in 20 years time.

Maybe your president is taking the long view and you're only thinking about the short term...

Why the cutbacks? Because the government is intent on punishing the little people just as they've always have been. Everyone from economists to the lowest of the low (politicians) have said the cuts are not necessary, ineffectual and what's even worse, damaging to the UK economy. At least bombing Libya is drawing the publics' attention away from the disasterous government policies.

The economists in the IMF seem to disagree, they announced that the cutbacks were the right thing to do and that the government should continue...

I suppose you'll claim their government stooges though since you don't agree with them?

You could also ask why intervene in Libya and not Bahrain.

Possibly because Libya isn't a US/UK dog, Bahrain is.

These dictators who run their countries and have the support of US/UK always get the same message- be friendly to US/UK interests and you'll be allowed to murder and steal as much as you want.

Thankfully the revolution in some Arab countries has helped to drive a few of these corrupt dictators out.

I say to hell with all these other countries we're giving trillions to, bring all our troops home and lets get our own countries sorted out and back on our feet, none of these countries give a sh**t about the UK or the US or how bad our economies are right now we're just bloody ATM machines to them and our politicians just keep handing out pin numbers.

Thanks for that I agree with every word

These countrys need to be left alone to sort out their own lives, almost all civilization have gone through civil wars, invasion, despotic rulers and sometimes worse and with time and their own efforts have managed to cobble together a system that works for them. Just because we are able to see what is happening via television and internet doesn't make the process any different or worse, until the people of these country stand up and fight for what they want and the youth of the country stop running away and shouting from the safety of their asylum sidelines then it doesn't matter how many millions we throw at the problem it will not be solved

We condemned Col Gaddafi for supporting the IRA against the UK.

We are supplying air power to anti government rebels who this morning on the radio said they could call in air strikes against military vehicles within 45 minute.

Strange world.

PS Are we still only there to protect innocent civilians ?
