POKEY LAFARGE & THE SOUTH CITY THREE

We're really excited about this gig. Pokey's got a real buzz about him and probably the next "roots" band to break mainstream - and rightly so, he's bloody great! They've got a new cd out which will be available on the night as well.

The perfect start to the night will come in the form of Billy Martin Jnr who is great and we love.

...and more on the acts...

This band’s burgeoning success continues as they have just carried off the Americana Album of The Year title in the annual Independent Music Awards, for their 2010 release, Riverboat Soul.

Pokey’s creative mix of early jazz, string ragtime, country blues and western swing rings true and fine, making him one of the most innovative of all the purists performing American roots music today

When Pokey LaFarge & The South City Three took Newport Folk Festival by storm, America’s big-circulation Spin magazine spread the word as fast as they could.

This was, they said, “the best discovery” - and one of the outstanding highlights of the entire event.

When the band arrived in the UK for their most extensive tour including a string of big outdoor summer events, the story was repeated. At Leicester’s Summer Sundae festival, with a strict no-encores policy due to the tight programming schedule, the band caused such a sensation that the organisers asked them if they’d play an extra fifteen minutes.

The band’s Riverboat Soul album went straight to the Number 5 slot on the influential American FAR indie roots chart and stormed the Top Ten of the Americana UK chart as well and entering the Red Lick Blues and R&B Chart, published by fRoots magazine.

Pokey Lafarge & The South City Three are now firmly established as one of the most hugely-entertaining acts on the circuit and the great quotes keep flowing in from reviewers who get it.

Influential mag, The List said: “Go, be delighted", Americana UK urged readers: “Book your seats now” and Acoustic magazine said they played “no-holds-barred, honest-to-goodness sheet-kicking music of the highest order.”

Writing in Maverick magazine, Jeremy Searle said: "There are a lot of bands heading down the lively old-timey musical route right now but LaFarge and his men raise themselves to the first rank by virtue of their winning combination of joie de vivre, chops, humour, irresistible danceability and sheer fun".

David Innes told readers of Rock ‘n’ Reel (R2) they were "a combo of quite spectacular talent”, adding that they were “a revelation at the 2010 Celtic Connections festival” and concluded: "Don't miss them" .

Good old Mojo praised their "impeccable period atmosphere".

LaFarge has no plans of stopping his mission of spreading the joy of early American music to the masses. 2011 has already brought a new vinyl single release on Third Man Records (produced by Jack White), as well as an upcoming full length album titled “Middle of Everywhere,” slated for release in the Summer of 2011. With a jam-packed 2011 performance and recording schedule that will certainly have them playing even more high profile venues and events worldwide, look for Pokey to continue his rise as a premier tradition-bearer, musician, songwriter, and entertainer.

BILLY MARTIN JNR

And in support a legend in his own right and a whippoorwill favourite…

Billy Martin Jnr, the “delta blues man of Sheffield.” Taking his cue from his father, and drawing on a lifetime’s experience, Billy performs original material in the style of the greatest blues men, injecting warmth and humour into his spellbinding performances. He is known as a highly accomplished writer and regular MC of Sheffield’s longstanding Philadelphia Blues and Beer Festival. A truly remarkable voice, and great storytelling. As fellow Sheffield performer Robin Hoare puts it, “Billy is unique. He’s Sheffield’s favourite blues poet. He’s magnetic.”

"Billy Martin Jnr is one of the great undiscovered Sheffield talents - uncompromising brilliance!" – RICHARD HAWLEY
