someone enlighten me process of buying used car with no road tax?

i am about to buy a second hand car but it has no road tax disc and dealer unwilling to pay for it.

if i get insurance for it on the day i wont get paper work till a few days but if i go to post office to buy the tax disc they will not let me buy a tax disc as im sure they rejected me last time because i couldnt show them original insurance documents as i was with swiftcover were i only had a black and white print out who does everything online and charged me £35 to send me a colour print out!?

- i dont have a drive way and it will be on side street so its essential i get road tax :(

give the dealer the equivalent of 6 months tax in addition to the agreed price and ask him to tax it on your behalf. it's not much to ask and its the only way he will sell the car

if he still wont do it then i think i'd be tempted to walk away since i'd be worried that there was something not quite right about the car and/or the dealer

If the person selling you the car is a dealer, then - if the car is being sold for use on the road - is he permitted to sell it to you without a valid road fund disc?

Could there be a question of 'permitting the vehicle to be used on the public highway without a valid road fund licence'?

As Andyofborg said, if he's not prepared to tax it for you (with you paying for the tax disc) why not?

You can tax any car at any post office with an email copy of a cover letter (not a faxed one) swift cover etc do it this way, and most decent insurance companies will email you a copy to print off.
