For them, there is no history of the Middle East, before that time and the Jews are supposed to be this foreign invader when in fact they've been there continously for 3,300 years. That's hardly anything to do with how long they have been fighting each other - which is pretty much since the schism. It's only relatively recently that the West developed enough to "support war and conflict the in the area" for many centuries before that it was fighting of attempts by assorted Islamic empires to conquer Europe. Just as many people in the West could do with remembering that the history of Iran didn't start in 1979 you could do with actually learning something about the pre 19th history of the middle east. If you did so you'd realise that the Sunni and Shia were fighting each other when not only was "the west" not able to project power into the middle east but "the west" as a concept didn't exist. Absolutely spot on there, don't know about anybody else but for me communist/socialist student types are a big worry, almost to traitoric proportions, I desperately worry for the sake of my kids when they're my age.
